November 15, 2024

WVNEWS—Current Hydro recently hosted a joint agency and public meeting in Gallipolis, Ohio, to present details of the 28.5 MW hydroelectric facility planned at the Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam in Mason County. The event included a site visit and presentations on environmental studies, project design, and community benefits.

The project is expected to generate 165,000 MWh of carbon-free electricity annually—enough to power over 15,000 homes—while creating 200 construction jobs and up to 10 permanent positions. Environmental features include fish-friendly turbine design, bald eagle nesting platforms, and ADA-compliant recreational access.

Attendees were assured the project will not impact river flow, noise levels, or the historical integrity of the site. Current Hydro emphasized its commitment to balancing clean energy development with environmental stewardship and local engagement.
