Current Hydro Receives Environmental Assessment from FERC for the Robert C. Byrd Hydroelectric Project

Pittsburgh, PA – Current Hydro today announced that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam Hydroelectric Project (P-15094). The milestone marks significant progress toward final licensing and construction of new renewable generation at the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam on the Ohio River in Mason County, West Virginia.

The Environmental Assessment evaluates the potential environmental impacts associated with constructing, operating, and maintaining the proposed 28.5 MW hydroelectric project. FERC staff concluded that licensing the project, with appropriate environmental protective measures, would not constitute a major federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment.

“The issuance of the Environmental Assessment is an important milestone for the Robert C. Byrd project,” said Jeremy King, Chief Executive Officer of Current Hydro. “We appreciate the continued coordination with FERC, USACE, and our state and federal partners as we advance the project. Robert C. Byrd demonstrates the opportunity to add reliable, carbon-free generation to existing federal infrastructure while minimizing environmental impacts.”

The Robert C. Byrd project is being developed at the existing USACE Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam and would add 28.5 MW of new generating capacity at the facility.

With the Environmental Assessment issued, Current Hydro will continue coordinating with FERC, USACE, and other agencies as the project advances through the remaining licensing and development activities.

“America has a significant opportunity to increase domestic energy production by adding hydropower to existing non-powered dams,” King added. “The Robert C. Byrd project is an example of how we can leverage existing infrastructure to deliver reliable, renewable generation while advancing development responsibly.”
