Robert C. Byrd
Hydroelectric Project
The Robert C. Byrd Hydroelectric Project (P-15094) will add hydroelectric capacity to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Robert C. Byrd Locks and Dam on the Ohio River, transforming it into a source of clean, reliable energy.
Located in Mason County, WV, this 28.5 MW facility will generate enough electricity to power over 18,000 homes each year—without storing water or altering river operations, which will remain fully under USACE management.
By harnessing the untapped hydroelectric potential of this federal facility, the Project will deliver affordable, baseload renewable power to the regional grid—meeting growing electricity demand while strengthening energy security across the region.
Why it Matters
Baseload Energy: Produces over 190,000 MWh annually of carbon-free, baseload electricity.
Community Impact: creates long-term jobs, supports local business, and contributes to regional tax revenue.
Environmental Benefits: Preserves natural river flow, boosts water quality, and protects federally listed species.
Minimal Land Impact: Project is primarily located on federal land, with transmission lines following existing utility corridors to reduce new land disturbance.
Economic Boost: Expected to employ 250+ workers during the three-year construction phase, with labor sourced locally and regionally.
Looking Ahead
Construction is expected to begin mid 2026. Once online, the project will operate for more than 50 years, delivering lasting benefits to the region.
