Current Hydro Receives Environmental Assessments from FERC for Pike Island and New Cumberland Hydroelectric Projects
Pittsburgh, PA – Current Hydro today announced that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued Environmental Assessments (EAs) for the company’s Pike Island Hydroelectric Project (P‑15230) and New Cumberland Hydroelectric Project (P‑15045). These milestones mark significant progress toward final licensing and construction of new renewable generation at existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) non-powered dams.
The Environmental Assessments, developed through extensive environmental review and coordination with federal and state agencies, evaluate the impacts of adding hydropower generation at the Pike Island and New Cumberland facilities along the Ohio River. FERC staff concluded that, with appropriate mitigation measures, both projects can be constructed and operated with limited environmental impact.
“The issuance of these Environmental Assessments is an important step forward for both projects,” said Jeremy King, Chief Executive Officer of Current Hydro. “We appreciate the collaboration with FERC, USACE, and our state and federal partners throughout this process. These projects demonstrate how existing infrastructure can be leveraged to deliver reliable, carbon-free generation while minimizing environmental impacts.”
The Pike Island and New Cumberland projects are designed to integrate generation into existing dam infrastructure without the need for new impoundments. Together, they will add meaningful renewable capacity to the regional grid while supporting navigation, environmental stewardship, and local economic development.
With the Environmental Assessments issued, the projects are advancing toward final license issuance, pending completion of the remaining consultations. Current Hydro will continue to coordinate closely with FERC and USACE as the projects move toward construction readiness.
“These projects highlight the opportunity to expand domestic energy production by adding hydropower to existing non-powered dams,” King added. “We are excited to move into the next phase and bring these projects closer to construction.”
