Dresden Island

Hydroelectric Project

The Dresden Island Hydroelectric Project (P-15626) will add hydroelectric capacity to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Dresden Island Locks and Dam on the Illinois River, transforming it into a source of clean, reliable energy.

Located in Grundy County, IL, the Project was originally licensed by FERC is September 2016 for a 50-year term. In August 2024, Current Hydro acquired the Project and updated the project design to reduce the footprint and minimize environmental impacts. The 9.6 MW facility will generate enough electricity to power over 15,000 homes each year—without storing water or altering river operations, which will remain fully under USACE management.

By harnessing the untapped hydroelectric potential of this federal facility, the Project will deliver affordable, baseload renewable power to the regional grid—meeting growing electricity demand while strengthening energy security across the region.

Why it Matters

  • Baseload Energy: Produces over 158,000 MWh annually of carbon-free, baseload electricity.

  • Community Impact: creates long-term jobs, supports local business, and contributes to regional tax revenue.

  • Environmental Benefits: Preserves natural river flow, boosts water quality, and protects federally listed species.

  • Recreation Boost: Improves fishing opportunities and expands public access to the Ohio River.

  • Economic Boost: Expected to employ 250+ workers during the three-year construction phase, with labor sourced locally and regionally.

Looking Ahead

Construction is expected to begin in Q3 2026, with commercial operation by Q4 2028. Once online, the project will operate for more than 50 years, delivering lasting benefits to the region.
